Rosenthal

Mercer's first mill, Rosenthal, is located near Blankenstein and produces approximately 340,000 ADMTs annually.

In late 1999, we completed a major capital project which converted the Rosenthal mill to the production of kraft pulp from sulphite pulp. This increased its annual production capacity from approximately 160,000 ADMTs to approximately 280,000 ADMTs, reduced costs and improved efficiencies. The aggregate cost of the project was approximately €361.0 million. Minor capital investments and efficiency improvements afterwards increased the Rosenthal mill's annual production capacity to approximately 340,000 ADMTs, further reducing emissions and energy costs.

When it opened in 1999, the converted Rosenthal mill was the first kraft pulp mill built in Germany in many decades, and remained the only one until Stendal's start-up in 2004. Rosenthal's location gives it access to both abundant local high-quality spruce chips and growing markets within Germany and in the European Union countries to the east and south. This mill's flexibility helps Mercer build stable, long-term relationships with specialty and niche pulp users, shipping them small custom orders on short notice.

Rosenthal is an efficient ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified NBSK pulp mill that is able to provide two distinct grades that offer optimal strength properties to satisfy our customers' diverse needs. Self-sufficient in steam and electrical power, the mill is able to sell excess electrical power of approximately 150,000 Mega Watt hours per year into the regional power grid.
